“Your partner towards a cleaner future”
Waste Reduction’s goal is to accelerate the transformation towards a circular economy by offering a holistic plastic compensation, which enables both industry and consumers to immediately counter today’s plastic crisis. Waste Reduction applies the logic of CO2 compensation to the plastic industry to achieve a reduction in plastic footprint.
Tell us more about your team ?
We are Martin, Ruth and Lukas: idealists, nature lovers, visionary, pragmatics and together we are “Waste Reduction”!
Martin’s experience in South East Asia with plastic pollution, inspired him to study entrepreneurship (MSc) in order to tackle this global issue. He developed the idea behind Waste Reduction with the aim of systematically changing plastic consumption and waste management.
Ruth holds a degree in international relations from Paris and London and has been an enthusiastic sparring partner since the early days of Waste Reduction.
The studied biologist Lukas knows best how to make our planet smile and has already conducted research on the degradation of plastic through bacteria. He adds an essential portion of calmness to our stressful startup life.
What makes your team invincible?
We are passionate about saving our planet’s beautiful nature from plastic pollution! Our shared conviction is the driver of our efforts and our complementary skills and personalities make us a perfect match – besides being co-workers, we have also become friends.
Where did your idea come from?
On several trips we all realized that our paradises are being flooded by plastic waste. Martin has always been very sensitive towards plastic pollution but it took some time for him to come up with Waste Reduction´s idea: a consumer friendly way to make plastic compensation work. We are in love with the problem we want to solve, the product-market -fit still needs to be proven.
What is unique about your business?
We are building sustainable plastic compensation in the form of a label, which will help us to collectively fight plastic pollution involving consumers and the industry. Darius calls us romantics, as we are trying to bring idealism to a capitalist world.
What is the biggest challenge you have encountered so far?
Our biggest challenge has been to get through to all of the different stakeholders in the supply chain of a product. Packaging manufacturers, producers, brand owners and retailers all need to agree and this process takes time.
What is success for you?
Long-term success for us means becoming obsolete… In a world with ecological alternatives to plastic, there would be no need for plastic compensation. Until this long-term goal is reached, we are looking to partner with a growing number of companies to help humanity reduce its plastic footprint.
Which characteristic do you think will make you successful?
There is an enormous pressure towards sustainable consumption, however, in a number of applications there is no solution to the usage of plastic, yet. Consumers are looking out for ways to avoid plastic, but lack viable alternatives. Plastic compensation closes this gap and offers a way to reduce the negative impact of plastic on the environment and helps finance long-term measures to help our planet and support a transformation towards a circular economy.
How do you think your company can scale?
We work hard to ensure that plastic neutrality will become a new consumer standard, just like “Fairtrade” or “Bio”. Since the plastic crisis is an awareness and financial problem, there are endless ways to scale our impact.
