“Build new ways”
ECOPALS addresses the plastic waste streams that were not recyclable – until now. They alleviate costs from waste management companies associated with the disposal of non-recyclable plastics by transforming these plastics into a value-add in the road construction industry.
Tell us about your team and their strengths:
Currently, we are a team of 5 ( 3 founders and 2 researchers). Jonas, Fabien, and Maximilian met at Zeppelin University where they worked together in the NGO NePals since 2016. Jonas and Fabien laid the foundations of EcoPals in 2019 and Maximilian joined the team at the beginning of 2020.
– Jonas Varga is in charge of product- and business model development. He has been driving the research and development of recycling in road construction in our mother organization NePals for 3 years now. His skills lie in the subject of operational process optimization and his knowledge of waste management as well as road construction.
– Maximilian Redwitz is responsible for our sales and business model development. His skills lie in the development of long-term strategies and agile business model development, as well as communication, market positioning, and design.
– Fabien Matthias manages our social impact in countries from the global south and networking in impact-driven lobbies. He has awesome skills in networking and idea development, usually, he brings a constant out-of-the-box perspective.
– Gudrun Gräbe and Torsten Müller are our 2 Fraunhofer researchers who can be paid on a contract basis through our research funds.
What inspired the team to create ECOPALS?
The idea of making a virtue out of the plastic problem originally comes from India. Over the last few decades, more projects have been focused on integrating recycled plastic into roads in recent years. Our impetus ultimately came from our time in Nepal, which inspired us to solve plastic pollution, we also wanted to help the disastrous local infrastructure.
Through our research partners in Germany, we focused on the unique approach of using non-recycled plastics, we eventually came up with the idea of making a virtue of Europe’s plastic streams as well.
What is unique about ECOPALS?
Although there is nothing that is unique in itself, what is special about our business is the cross-industry solution that transforms a commodity with negative market value into a commodity with marketability.
What is your “unique selling proposition” in comparison to the competition?
Our uniqueness to our customers is our commitment to make road construction more sustainable while maintaining quality. In doing so, we offer not only a CO2 reduction and longer durability of the road but the possibility for the builders to make their contribution to our earth.
What means success for you?
For us, success is a measurable and maximized impact on the economy, the environment, and society. EcoPals would be successful if we can give a second life to millions of tons of previously unrecycled plastic, reduce the carbon footprint of the road construction industry and build durable roads in the process.
Which characteristic do you think will make you successful?
We believe that in every problem there is an opportunity, and working together leads to true success. We believe in our team and that already makes us successful
