“Digital solutions for a better rheumatology care”
One of the strengths of this company is its interdisciplinary team working together to create smart software solutions with the mission to improve the daily life of people affected by rheumatic diseases. In the long term, they would like to contribute to fueling research, exploring new evidence, and improving therapies in rheumatology.
Can you tell us more about your team’s history?
Matthias and Chris went to the same high school and played soccer together. After graduating, they lost sight of each other for about 10 years until they got in touch again in the middle of last year by a lucky coincidence. After exchanging more information, it turned out that both of them are affected ( directly or by somebody close ) by an inflammatory autoimmune disease. With the time, we got intensively involved with rheumatic diseases and started the Digital Rheuma Lab in October alongside their full-time jobs and studies. Matthias takes care of business development and Chris of the product and internal processes. Matus joined as the third co-founder at the end of 2020 and takes care of the software development.
In the meantime, we are researching and prototyping on solutions for smarter digital care for people with rheumatic diseases in a team of 6 people consisting of patients, doctors, marketing, product, and software experts.
Tell us more about Digital Rheuma Lab beginning?
We did not start with a brilliant idea but we started with the focus on a big problem which we know very well from our own experience: the undersupply of rheumatology care in Germany.
Therefore we are currently conducting research with clinical partners in order to identify proper needs of those affected.
What is the biggest challenge you have encountered so far?
On the one hand, our team members live spread across Germany and, due to corona, we did not have the opportunity to work together on one site. The entire project has been running remotely; this was certainly challenging in the middle of an ongoing pandemic.
On the other hand, we were still working full time or finishing our studies and financed ourselves with freelance projects, so it was challenging to push the project forward. Here we are very happy to continue developing our start-up full-time, together with on-site in the future.
What means success for you?
Since we want to improve the situation of people suffering from chronic rheumatic diseases, significant improvements in rheumatic patient care through digital tools would probably be the biggest possible success for us.
Which characteristic do you think will make you successful?
We are driven and intrinsically motivated due to our background. This also allows us to build very user-centric and authentic products, so we think this will be the key to our success.
Which famous personality or company would you like to be your client? Why?
Since we want to achieve the broadest possible improvement in care and improve the circumstances of as many affected people as possible, we do not have a single preferred customer. However, we would not mind if at some point celebrities like Selena Gomez or Lady Gaga, who are affected by rheumatic diseases, raved about our products (laughs).
